CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN
Kerry watched the others leave the room before logging in to review the social media files. She was relieved rather than bothered about being abandoned in an empty room. She found fitting in with the tightly knit group hard and felt like a complete outsider. She had always struggled to make friends, and while she was comfortable in a one-to-one situation, she could only speak in a crowded room of strangers with the help of a drink or three. Without alcoholâs assistance, she could never think of anything remotely interesting or entertaining to say.
She was flicking through Tillyâs account but was nursing a hangover and found concentrating hard. She could see the victimsâ faces on the whiteboard whenever she looked up. Knowing what had happened to them, she avoided looking at them closely. Scrolling through happy pictures of them at social events was challenging.
She hadnât looked at the crime scene reports for the same reason. The news reports about the event were bad enough. Thinking about how frightened the students and Ryanâs sons would have been in their final moments brought a lump to her throat. She smiled and shook her head at her motherâs frequent warning that her imagination would be the death of her.
She was startled from reminiscing when a phone on the far side of the room rang. Even though she was alone, she pointlessly looked around, hoping someone else would answer it or it would stop ringing. On a plus note, nobody would see how nervous she was about answering the call.
She logged out of the computer system and hurried down to take the statement. She had no idea what it was about. DI Williams hadnât said, and she hadnât thought to ask. She had fought hard against her father for this placement as far away from him as possible, and she was keen to make a good impression through her work. So far that hadnât been possible, but maybe she could turn things around with the statement.
She had a good relationship with her parents, and she would always appreciate the start in life they had given her and their unwavering support. But she wanted to stand on her own record, not on who her father happened to be. She hoped out here that nobody would know who he was, let alone her connection to him. If she could also get a handle on her drinking, that would be the icing on the cake.
On her way down the stairs, it occurred to her she couldnât remember where the interview rooms were. Superintendent Dewhurst had given her a whistle-stop tour of the station on her first day, but all she could remember was they were somewhere on the second floor. She understood now why her father had been vague about whether he liked him. He was pompous, and his constant false smile had been off-putting. She would make a final judgement after she had seen a bit more of him, but on first impressions, she felt that he was someone to avoid as much as possible.
